Preparation, Prayer and Practice
Preparation, Prayer and Practice
Lent is a period of Self-Preparation, Self-Examination and Self- Renewal. This time period is to think about us and others.
In my school days many of my friends were good in athletics. Especially long-distance running, they will be at school early morning 5 o’ clock and do their preparation and training. They prepare themselves very hard, running a marathon takes preparation, patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication. They had to make many sacrifices on food and fitness. Sports meet was very close, without any practice and preparation a friend of mine gave his name to the Marathon race. We said ‘Machan, you can’t do it you are without any practice, he didn’t listen to our words. He said, ‘I can run very fast; I can break the record.’
On the day of the sports meet everything was ready for the marathon, all the boys were cheering and shouting for their house runners, our friend was ready in the starting line. The race started, in full swing he increased his speed, but on the way, he was getting very slow further after few minutes he walked, and he fainted. Similarly in connection with the story we can’t just arrive at Easter and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus without preparation and some effort on our part.
Our journey through lent requires Preparation, Prayer and Practice.
Jesus prepared himself for the ministry, he used 40 days for fasting and prayer to be connected with God.
Prayer is important because it helps us to stay close to God. When we pray, we are opening up our hearts to God and prayer helps us to grow in our relationship with God. The more we talk and spend time with someone the more we get to know them. The same thing happens when we spend time in prayer connecting with God. The more time we spend talking to God, the closer we will become! James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (NKJV).
Third point Practice, during this lent season we are called to practice alms giving and fasting. Fasting is one of the most ancient practices associated with Lent. Prophet Isaiah insisted that fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God. This shows us the goal of fasting is very closely linked to prayer and a right disposition of heart. We have to Practice fasting not only through food but with our attitudes. We should work on habits to help to be a better person.
Alms giving-more than simply giving money, almsgiving is an act of love that can deepen our prayer life and bring a greater sense of meaning to fasting. Almsgiving incorporates the spiritual practices of prayer and fasting in a way that manifests itself by caring for our neighbors in need.
We are called to prepare ourselves in prayer, practicing fasting and almsgiving in our daily life. May God be with us all in this season of Lent.
